Long Island Man Drives Drunk With 3 Children In Backseat, Crashes Into Tree: Police

A Long Island man was arrested after he allegedly drove drunk with an adult passenger and three kids in the back, crashing into a tree, police said.

The crash happened just after 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1 in Garden City.

According to Nassau County Police, 41-year-old Ruben Gonzalez of Westbury was driving north on Cherry Valley Avenue while he was drunk.

He had a front passenger, a 37-year-old woman, and his three children in the back, ages 4, 9, and 11. 

Police said that near the intersection of 10th Street, Gonzalez’s 2023 Cadillac Escalade went off the road and crashed into a tree.

All passengers were transported to a local hospital, and the 4-year-old child reportedly suffered a minor back injury.

Gonzalez was placed under arrest at the scene and charged with:

  • Driving while intoxicated;
  • Aggravated driving while intoxicated with children under 16 (Leandra’s Law), three counts;
  • Endangering the welfare of a child, three counts; and
  • Multiple traffic violations.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at Hempstead’s First District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 2. 

The identity of his front passenger was not released.
